LEJOG Gets Underway!

The Night before !
Great to be on the road at last after a 5hr train ride from Paddington to Penzance. A largely uneventful trip punctuated with a crash course for Simon on his new mobile 'phone. He has insisted that I teach him to leave a suitable message that he will be unavailable Forever......"Can't speak now, am on my bike".

We had booked a room at the Sunny Bank House B&B just up from Sennen Cove with lockable garage to secure our bikes. Our landlady informed us that she was yet to receive another guest who was doing the "End to End" as it is known in these parts dressed as a fish.  We will be intrigued to see what he looks like at breakfast at 07:30.  Porridge is promised.

Very ominous skies looming we decided first to bike straight to Lands End for this photo...it may be the last sunset we will see for the next few days! ........

Hello to all . This is Simon,

Unfit. Unprepared. Ill Equipped. But we have arrived at Lands End. The train journey to Penzance was very nice - no pedalling. We cycled the 13 miles from Penzance to Lands End - the hill out of Newlyn was unbelievable, steeper than you can imagine. I seem to be carrying everthing bar the kitchen sink in my panniers and the fully loaded bike must be at least 50 kilos.  And one is expected to lug this lot 1000 + miles to the north of Scotland using only one's legs.  You must be joking! This is no way to spend one's retirement. Whose stupid idea was this anyway?

The Cornish lanes are very beautiful - steep sides full of bluebells, garlic, red campion, Star of Bethlehem and buttercups.

We found an excellent pub - "The First & Last" for supper.  Hope it is not the last. Big plate of fish & chips for a fiver.    Six pints of Doom Bar are a wonderful reviver.

I could murder a cigar!

  1. John,
We thought of you while wolfing down our sausage rolls at the Windsor Famers Market this morning before DRIVING back home. :-).

Can't tell you how impressed we are, as it's not fair to make you blush in addition to windburn and sunburn. Besides, don't wanna jinx!

What's the right wish for cyclists? Bon Voyage? Safe journey? Fair miles? Alan suggests "Sweet Cadence".

So sweet cadence from Alan and Brenda
